Simple Changes Jan 18-24

I am siting here once again reflecting on how my week went. School started once again so I tried hard to meet my goals and adjust to my new schedule. Things went well I think.

My Physical goal was to walk my dog every day weather permitting. I missed two days so I am happy with the effort I made. In addition to walking my dog, I continued to drink my water every day. I am amazed at how much better I have been feeling. Adding just that small amount of exercise to my daily life as well as drinking plenty of water has had some immediate benefits. I sleep better at night, have more energy and do not feel exhausted at the end of the day. I feel productive and am happy with the amount of things I can get done.

My Mental goal was to take some time away from studying to clear my head. This time had to be free from electronics. I loved it. In fact I am getting rid of some electronic distractions in my life such as Facebook. I will still keep my blog because it is nice to have a place to keep my family updated on what is happening. I feel that I was able to balance all the changes that happened this week and do not feel that I wasted a lot of time doing nothing.

My Spiritual goal was to study this week's lesson in Gospel Doctrine, reflect on the scriptures, and pray to know how they apply to my life. This goal was good also. I found some quiet time to reflect and read. Nothing amazing happened as far as witnesses or anything but I do feel that I will see improvement in my spiritual life as I continue to study and pray.

Here are my goals for this week:

Physical Goal: Workout at the fitness center twice a week and practice yoga on Friday.

Mental Goal: Be a positive influence on my family. Speak nicely and calmly and show love for them

Spiritual Goal: Continue to study the Gospel Doctrine lessons, reflect on the scrpitures read and pray to know how they apply to my life.

Simple Changes

It is time to reflect on how things went with my goals last week. Over all, I am happy with how things went. I have decided that I need to post my theme for the year around my house as a daily reminder. I think that will make a difference.

My Physical goal for last week was to drink at least 64 oz of water a day. I did this almost every day. As the week went on, I found that drinking that much water and not exercising regularly, were not good, so I cut back a bit. I did feel really good though and on the days I got a late start, I could tell the difference. The only thing I need to do is get in the habit of carrying my water bottle with me so I can have water throughout the day. I filled a 2 quart pitcher with water and added lemon slices or apple slices with a cinnamon stick and filled my bottle with that throughout the day. Having the flavor in the water made it enjoyable to drink.

My Mental goal was to start a gratitude journal and write in it daily. I also did this every day. I do not like to journal so it was a challenge to remember to write but I did it. As each day went on, it was nice to list all the things I was thankful for each day. I was surprised to see how many things I came up with even on days when it seemed that nothing happened. I chose to write before going to bed so it was a nice ending to my day.

My Spiritual goal was to pray more meaningfully. This one needs some work still. However, I think that my goal for this week will help. I want to avoid falling into the routine of praying the same way, saying the same things unless I really have a problem or question. So even though I feel this needs more work, I am going to add to my goal for the week.

Here are my goals for this week!

Physical Goal ~Walk my dog every day (weather permitting)

Mental Goal ~ Make sure I take a break daily from studying or other responsibilities just for me. This has to be no electronic time. I want to read a novel, or meditate or something to clear my head.

Spiritual Goal ~ Study the upcoming lesson for Gospel Doctrine. Pray about the questions and use the time to focus on the scriptures. Pray to know how the things talked about apply to my life.

Small and Simple Things

"Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great. " D&C 64:33

I have decided that this scripture is going to be my theme for this year. I realize I start every year saying I want to make changes in my life and I even list what I want to do. However, nothing comes from it. I fizzle off and changes don't happen. I realized that I usually set changes but don't make them goals. I need to break things down into manageable steps so I don't get overwhelmed. Taking changes one step at at time is what I need to do.

I have decided to divide my life into three areas; Physical Health, Mental Health and Spiritual Health. I will set weekly goals in each of these three areas and work on 1 thing for the week. I realize that it takes 30 days to create a habit. I don't plan on stopping after a week. I will build slowly. If, at the end of the week I feel I need more time, I won't add to it. I want to feel ready to add the next step.

I have decided that I will set side time on Friday to reflect on the week and see how things went. I will use this blog to keep me accountable and go from there. So here are my goals for the upcoming week.

Physical Health: Drink at least 64oz of water daily
Mental Health: Start a gratitude journal and write in it daily
Spiritual Health:  Pray more meaningfully

LDS Feminism

There seems to be a trend of LDS Feminist activity going around that has saddened me greatly. Ever since the announcement of the missionary age change in October General Conference, I have seen more blog posts and comments to those blog posts about equal rights for women in the church. I am not one to take a stand on such issues usually. I feel that people are entitled to their views and opinions even if I don't always agree.

Today that changed. I read an article Mormon Women Plan to Wear Pants that made me sad. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a woman, I felt the need to share my thoughts.

I do not believe that men and women are unequal in the church. We have our own divine roles that our Heavenly Father, who created us, gave us. We were created as separate beings. Men and women both have roles. We have been taught that these roles must work together to work properly. Women cannot bring forth life without a man and men need the support of the women in the Priesthood. The roles each play are different but not unequal. I feel that if we were to be equal, meaning same responsibilities and roles, we would have been created the same and given the same roles. I am not unhappy about my role as a woman. I may be called old fashioned but I believe that as a woman in the gospel, my role is to nurture the family and support my husband  in his role as the Priesthood holder for our family. I do not see this role as being less or unequal to my husband. We are united in marriage and equal partners in that marriage with seperate but divine roles.

I do not understand why some things appear to be unequal, such as the age and length of time sister missionaries can serve, but I do know that these guidelines were set forth by our Heavenly Father through Prophets. I know that they are there for a specific purpose even if I do not know what that purpose may be. My job is to have faith that what is set forth is right and correct. So will I wear pants on Sunday? No. I do not believe in the cause. I am happy to be a woman in the role I have been given. I do not want that to change.

Cold

I could feel it creeping in yesterday, around the edges of the room. It crept slowly, just a little bit here and a little bit there. I noticed it though, lurking in the corners of the room. I tried to ignore it, after all, it had been late this year. But there it was- cold. I look forward to the first time cold visits each year. I get to enjoy a crackling fire, the smooth, creaminess of hot chocolate, the warm scent of pumpkin spice candles, and the delicious scent of baked goods. Cold lets me do all the warm things I love so much!

Treasure

My writing teacher is an amazing teacher. She takes the time to get to know her students and then surprises us with things she thinks we will like. Today was that day for me. I was sitting in the teacher office waiting room waiting for my appointment with another professor. My writing teacher walked over with a book in her hand. We talked for a minute and she said that she thought I might enjoy the book and I could borrow it if I was interested. Of course I was interested. I love books! Then she handed it to me.
One look at the cover and my eyes lit up like Christmas. I might have even squealed with delight.
It was a Dr. Suess book I have never heard of before. Dr. Suess is my absolute favorite children's author and my teacher knew it. I opened it and lost myself in this book for a few minutes. It is truly amazing! The story behind the book is amazing too. I found a treasure today and can't wait to add this book to my collection. I can't retell the story behind the book with any kind of justice so find a copy and read it. Any fan of Dr. Suess will appreciate the work that went into this book. Thank you Dr. Horan for introducing me to another gem for my collection!
